![]() ![]() Some of them were friends way before this was recorded and it's kind of sad to see the band keeping each other at a distance, almost at arms length, emotionally throughout the show.Īnd WHAT a show. There was a lot of talk about divorce, band break ups, heroin etc before and after but this performance - this, to begin with, slightly uptight, nervy performance - showcases a man of remarkable talent backed by a handful of remarkable musicians. ![]() The unplugged session puts an unfliching light on the band at what was probably a bit of a crossroads for them. The humour was, I guess, lost on a lot of people as they seemed too engrossed in the car-crash that was Courtney Love and the effect she seemed to have on people in and around Nirvana but, anyway, she's not the issue here. They rocked in the best possible sense of the word on both occasions and School still never fails to make me laugh, 20 years down the road. Saw them on their first UK tour in '89 with Chad still on drums, then again a year later with Dave (he nearly blew my ear drums out - I've NEVER seen anyone play the drums so hard). ![]() Apart from Jsne's Addiction in 1989, Sonic Youth in '87 and Big Black, also in '87 - Nirvana are probably the best band I ever had the pleasure of being in the same room as.
